According to the CDC, 800,000 seniors are hospitalized per year due to an injury that occurred during a fall. As caregivers, it is easy to panic when the senior in our care takes a tumble. Knowing what to do in the event of a fall is the first step to getting them up safely, for the both of you. Here are some tips.

Harsh Winter Months Mean Greater Fall Risk for Seniors

As the temperatures start to drop, it's important to remember that the harsh conditions mean a greater fall risk for seniors. During freezing rain, ice, and snow a senior’s risk of falling increases by as much as 20 percent. In addition, a fall during subzero temperatures means seniors face not only injuries as a result of the fall, but hypothermia if they are unable to retreat to the indoors. It's important to discuss fall risks with seniors and create a plan of action before cold weather hits.
